| Re: Should I encourage non-profit coalition or alliance in my small town?

I am the director of the Trenton Community Music School in NJ. About a year ago, I invited any organization in the city involved in arts programming for children and youth to breakfast (sponsored by the local newspaper). That was the beginning of our collaboration which we named City Arts. We do not intend to seek a 501(c)3. Just getting together once a month in the same room produces sparks, collaborations, networking, encouragement, and so on. We have a structured agenda for part of the meeting which goes like this: one organization hosts (provides coffee or more) and that CEO gives a presentation: who they are, what is their history, how they are funded, what has been successful, what they dream of. Then the group gives feedback on two questions: What are the strengths of this organization? What are the obvious opportunities for collaboration? This has led to a) joint advertising; b) a coordinated plan for summer day camps that flow sequentially and don't compete with each other; c) a teen leadership training with an arts component that developed out of the need for counselors for the summer camps. The remainder of the meeting is networking. I can't wait to see what happens next!
