Sheryl: I thought about my response afterward, and realized that I was referring primarily to "family foundations". And the client actually was an organization on whose board I serve, so the relationship building was in line with your reference. I do insist clients build the relationships themselves, and strive to be fairly invisible in the process otherwise. I believe that we will see many 'new situations' this year. I noticed that two foundations I had flagged as very good prospects for a client have stopped taking applications, another changed to accepting applications only once yearly instead of quarterly. (now funding for a specific program can not be applied for). The Philanthropy Digest had an article not too long ago about foundations not able to carry through with pledged funding due to market losses. Makes me wonder if the foundation your client spoke with had some outstanding multi-year pledges that were impacting total funds available?
