Because Foundation grant forms tend to be very similar and dry, we often tend to forget that their trustees and officers are people whose experiences in daily life may closely match many of our own. These folks understand the effects of the economy as much (or more) than many, and do not exist in a vacuum. If it were me, I would tell them exactly what you told us, especially if you are asking them for more money than previous. If you applied for and received a one-time funding, tell them that. As always, do tell them that their funding is especially needed to achieve the tremendous things your program accomplishes. Honesty and transparency will carry the day and are always much appreciated by program officers and foundation trustees.
