No D&O shouldn't stop social progress

Posted by Wise Guy on 10/20/2008, 10:35 am, in reply to "Re: D and O insurance"

The claims rate for D&O is so very very low and claims costs rather low that serving without it could be a reasonable justifiable risk, esp. for some orgs. at certain times. And there are ways to insure (ha-ha) against misdeeds (through sound governance practices) that are needed and can placate anxious board members some.
Plus, you would never ever serve for a nonprofit lacking D&O? One should never serve?
How many vital social movements and start up nonprofits never had D&O and yet made massive gains for society. Peace, civil rights, human rights, health advocacy, women's issues, the environment, clean government, etc. Reasonable risk is OK in some settings. Board members, within reason and at right time and place need to be risk takers.
