| Re: Nonprofit organizations in crisis

John: There has been a strong and deliberate message sent to nonprofit leaders for some time now that in order to maintain financial health they MUST diversify. It has been commented within the nonprofit sector that smaller organizations would start to decline in number due to constrictive regulations which increase annually. The major mile-post for many very small nonprofits will be to make it past the newer Form 990 regulations...for those who need to hire outside accounting help, that might be the "straw that breaks the camel's back". The fact remains that we have seen a plethora of nonprofits form for years, and that trend in itself is not sustainable. If ever there was a time for consolidation and collaboration, now would be a good one! I for one will not be changing the approach I take with grant funding on behalf of clients. My current clients do not rely heavily on State or Federal dollars, so their funding crises is related to individuals who are taking a beating from the economic conditions. They are trimming their program expectations and targeted number of clients in light of that reality.
