I may not really represent the respondent you are looking for with this question, but I can tell you as a consultant that I certainly think about capping the number of clients I can serve simultaneously at any given time. I've always thought that I could handle 30 grantwriting clients simultaneously with the staff I currently have, if almost all of them were RENEWAL clients,..nonprofits who have been with me longer than a year. It's the new clients, with the steep learning curves to be mounted, that are the least 'cost effective' a client for me. I'm just about at the edge of my productivity this year, with 26 current clients of which 12 have been with me less than a year. I am truly at my maximum capacity (i.e, no more hours to sell!) and having to work VERY (VERY!) hard to keep producing the same consistently high quality product month after month with this client load. I can imagine that it is the same for nonprofits, where growth has to be carefully managed, and people who need you turned away, just to keep quality high and to stay viable and sustainable. I look forward to the responses in this thread.
