I have had a similar experience as Rick's, with poor performance on purchased lists and will not recommend any list purchase service because we stopped buying them...feeling the return on investment did not justify the purchase price, at least in our case. I would not be alone in noting that the number of nonprofits is growing daily, and lists are an easy if not inexpensive way to make a splash. However, too many pieces of nonprofit mail become the proverbial "junk-mail", even when they are of very high quality.

Here was the hard work piece that paid off for a nonprofit I serve...Once a year our newspaper inserts a magazine section with the top performing 250 LOCALLY owned businesses with a profile of their owner. This has been an invaluable tool! I enter the names, addresses, etc. in a database and we do a separate mailing piece for them, as a LOCAL nonprofit serving area children. The response has been good, not great in terms of numbers (about 5%), but the ones who responded really stepped up (one added us as a "cause marketing" piece and included us in every TV and print ad for one year). You can imagine what that did for us!
