Perhaps you might consider GiftWorks - it seems to be a good application for smaller shops in particular - very user-friendly and flexible and if cost is an obstacle, it is very economical. TechSoup is a good source of information about the various donor database packages out there, their functionality, appropriateness, etc.
P.S. When I read your post about fundraising benchmarks, I had to stop and look around to make sure MY name wasn't Ruth Terry! Our situations are quite similar - it is very daunting!
