CatherineDiane, Consider what the grant writing agency will expect from you so that you are not surprised by any restrictions. Such an agency would probably anticipate the potential for writers to write independently, and may ask you to sign either a broad non-compete agreement, or at least something restricting you from writing for any of their clients for X number of years. That kind of clause can be very vague, as you might not know all of their clients. Even if you ask the prospect if they had ever been one of the agency's clients, the person you ask may not really know if someone else in the organization had used the agency's services. If there is no 'non-compete' clause, working for the agency would be an excellent way to learn the ropes, network, find out who's who, what resources are available, and learn an entire processing system for getting a proposal out the door in the best manner possible (or learn how totally disorganized that agency is, and know exactly how to offer a better service, should that be the case.)
