Carl, you are absolutely correct. What is occurring is that Sysco & Food Services of America (national food suppliers) are valuing the donation going to the food bank at market wholesale weighed against their current price/catalogue listing...however, that value accounting isn't being carried over to the Emergency shelter Kitchen. I am not sure how the food bank is noting value of services delivered. I have come to accept that our individual program budgets (which are more internal documents, and utilized for funder review) can note in-kind values much more readily than the traditional bookkeeping system for the org. as a whole. I was hoping to receive info. on how others weigh this dilemma...1,000 volunteers delivering services dependent on $400,000 worth of in-kind donated food supplies to provide 200,000 meals annually!
