    Amazingly, this is a much more elusive subject than I had anticipated. It makes sense to me that donations, if they came directly to the organization by major food wholesalers, would be receipted to the wholesalers with a dollar value amount. Instead, they are gifted to the local food bank,which then redistributes to shelters and families. The food bank is not providing a value, so the shelter has not either. But they certainly know the costs of the items when they have to purchase from same wholesaler.

    Your idea is pretty much what they have determined to utilize since I posted. I had asserted that the donation (income/in-kind) would be a wash with the program service "expense" of supply/out-go, and it is a specific cost of doing business on behalf of the clients served. The only difference is that much of the cost of doing business is being donated "in-kind".
