A Sole Proprietorship can be set up using your own Social Security number, because you and your business are looked on as one and the same thing to the IRS. Even if a Sole Proprietor gets an EIN# to look more professional, the IRS uses the person's own SS# to identify you for everything except withholding requirements. You file your 'business' income taxes as an additional form on your PERSONAL income taxes (even if you file jointly with a spouse!) because the IRS regards you and your business as the same entity. (In fact, in most states, Sole Proprietors don't even have to carry Workman's Comp Insurance.) I'm not an attorney, but I think your donor is correct.
