| Donor acknowledgement

An alumnus sent our NPO a charitable donation via check, which was written from his sole proprietor business account. We acknowledged receipt of the gift from the business, not the alumnus. Now the alumnus is upset; he wants the gift acknowledgement to specify that the gift is from him personally and not from his business. Is there any authoritative guidance regarding this issue? I say we can't do it, but I'm having trouble finding documentation to back me up.
