More and more family foundations are overwhelmed with the crazy volume of grant requests they receive in any single grant cycle, sometimes 10 to 100 times more worthy requests than they have money to give out. If they had to hire staff to respond to all of those requests, or even return phone messages, they would have even less financial resources with which to make grants. When I do 990 research, I'm seeing more and more family foundations no longer accepting grant proposals, and instead giving only to pre-selected charities.

And, honestly, you may not have let enough time go by. I know of some small family foundations that wait until they are all together at the beach each summer to review the LOIs they've received. They send out invitations to those they are willing to read a full proposal from, and then over Thanksgiving or Christmas when they are all together again, they make their grant awards. So maybe there is still hope.
