If a foundation does not publish a phone number, and their Foundation Center listing suggests a "Letter" as the initial contact, then go ahead and send a 2-page concept letter. If they say 'proposal' as the initial contact, go ahead and mail out a proposal. Just follow their guidelines exactly and do as much research as you can. You want to REALLY research any foundation that you are applying to without speaking to them first. Make sure you've studied their last 4 years IRS-990s to see who they gave to, and how much, and use that information to make a realistic $$ request. Read their Annual Report and make sure you understand their giving philosophy. And be sure and provide your email and phone number so that they can call YOU.
