    KathyS:

What you are looking for is legal management of foundation assets, and licensed, respected firms will provide a fairly comprehensive overview if you are serious about having outside management.
This review should provide analysis of current practices vs. potential [future] practices which would help to justify or negate a switch.

If you have qualified individuals on your board who are able to maintain and manage assets/investments of the foundation as a standing sub-committee (it should never be just one member), that practice could continue, however, you must look at the legal ramifications as well. There are reasons that investment firms are regulated, maintain continued education and licensing requirements, etc. There is a tremendous amount of information that needs to be considered regarding tax implications for the foundation within the management of it's assets.
