    non-profit accounting re: in-kind donations

    Hello all:

As a subject that comes up, I would like some valued input.

In-kind donation tracking in a financial statement can be problematic, but I want to know if any of you serve a non-profit who is currently doing just that?

Scenario: a non-profit which serves as an emergency shelter/food program for a large city. Actual donor cash is dwarfed by non-cash donations...not just volunteer labor, but also by food commodities received (equaling in value to about 1.5 Million annually)+ ($750,000 on clothing, blankets, etc.). Without inclusion of this value in budget, the appearance is that more than 65% of income is spent on administrative costs, and next to nothing on program (food, clothing). That number is unfriendly to any kind of donor, whether it be foundation, federal or individual donor.

Not including it in annual budget, but mentioning it in annual audit statement is awkward because the numbers don't add up...(their current practice).

If any of you (perhaps senior experienced grant writers) have come across this and were able to proceed forward successfully towards funding, let me know. If you know of a good resource which shows actual implementation practice/examples of inclusion of non-cash assets within financials, I'm all ears.

    Thanks~
