    Donaldo:

So nice to know we didn't completely gut you with our responses, and, thank you for your follow up comments about how you have spoken to management and they have begun to see the light.

The task before you is still enormous. Linda mentioned property rights (intellectual or other) and research finding rights (not sure where this will all fall). The other question that comes to mind is the amount of money that the company has deemed necessary to carry out the research. Do you have a budget clearly formed with justifiable expenses for personnel, lab space, overhead, materials, computers, etc., etc.? What type of dollars are you seeking? That will help you define potential funders. If you are looking for $50,000 it will be different than looking for $3,000,000.

It is incredibly important to proceed correctly with this. If your company has a non-profit arm, is there a staff person there who is assigned to securing outside funding? Being a newbie, frankly this seems like a monumental task to assign you, and I don't know that we can actually provide what you need from an information standpoint in short sentences here on a message board.

Your letter format question has come up again...I will let you know that we can't answer that, only your "potential, yet un-identified funder" can. What I am saying is that you must first locate a potential funder, then read their strict guidelines on how they like to be approached.
If you continue in this search, I recommend the foundation center's on-line funder search. Before purchasing this tool, you may want to test-drive it at your nearest cooperating library. Click on the link:

and find the one nearest you. The librarians at these locations have been well trained in using the collections, and will assist you in some basic research. Having a librarian assist you will save hours...literally. The search engine is so large, and defining your search takes practice, so let them help.

My gut, experienced response, is to advise you to convince them to get some outside help from a seasoned professional. Nothing against you on any level, but if you looked at my previous post regarding research grants, you begin to get an idea of how complicated this really is.

If you want to contact me off-line, click on my posting name and it will bring up further info. I could potentially recommend those who worked the grants end of her project.
