| Re: Recommendations for entry into grant writing as a career

Hi Rick, I thought I was alone among the dying breed of people who raise funds from foundations who want to be called "proposal writers" rather than the very incorrect "grant writer." But the term "grant writer" is now a part of our language and it is impossible to fight it. So I simply go along. I let others call me "grant writer," and I don't correct them as I used to, but I keep the privilege of calling myself "proposal writer." When I taught my course I used to explain that the check one receives from the funder is the "grant" and the document requesting the grant is the "proposal." One of the ways words come into the language is through misuse and my discussion above is an excellent example of misuse. Apologies for the rant, but once in awhile one must vent among friends. Catherine, I must say that after reading all of your posts I am totally confused about what you want to do. You kept emphasizing that you are undertaking a mega, multi-million project (and have never written a proposal of this scope before) and yet you are also considering part-time work with a consulting firm? The nursing home that asked you to write the Case for Support placed an enormous amount of trust in you. Don't you think your energies should be directed to doing the best possible job for them? Or am I misunderstanding what is happening?
