| RE: one more thought: from LOI to full proposal
Posted by Julie Rodda on 3/22/2008, 6:31 pm, in reply to "Re: A little intimidated - my 1st grant is for a huge capital project" VIP Poster
I contemplated your question a bit more, and would like to add some information. During a recent round-table with our Program Officer at a rather large Pacific Northwest Foundation, I heard a sobering statistic. The PO told us that over 75% of all approved LOI's through their grant process NEVER submit a full proposal. They did a study to find out why that was, and this was the response: Many organizations can handle the LOI at two pages and budget, but less than 25% were prepared to submit a full application once they received the instructions/requirements. Preparing a proposal that runs 30-60 pages, with documentation of facts and assurances is serious business, and applicants need to understand that. So, their thought process was that they would rather have an organization take the time it needed to submit the full proposal well written, than to get one back quickly that fell short of the mark. (This was the reason I was not concerned about a 3-6 month time frame from positive LOI to full proposal submission). (This foundation did not have a time-line for submission and it's Trustees meet monthly). Hopefully you will take that as an encouragement to not rush the gate with any proposal after receiving the affirmed LOI. Make phone calls to the foundation personnel assigned to your type of request, and ask the necessary questions to complete it with confidence.
