Catherine: It sounds as if many key pieces are in order for you. Congratulations on your enthusiasm, and your interest in getting advice. This board has helped me numerous times, even after having written grants for some time! It isn't entirely unheard of to come across something you haven't seen before, and to want to gather input from those who have! I would caution you to use a slightly different vocabulary when describing your "company". To be using verbiage that resonates universally, it needs to be Non-Profit, or Organization, or NPO. Company leads one to think "for profit" first, which is why Aurelia asked what she did out of the gate. You are correct to want local responsiveness first. Your funders will ask for this. Not only grants, but individual donations on the local level. You will want to reflect your local community buy-in on all your LOI budgets and reflect that in your narrative section. These days, collaborative partnerships are big, and if you have these, note them, underscore them, highlight them (figuratively speaking). A word of caution, and that is Major Funders typically have a very long review process. I have one I am dealing with that received our LOI almost one year ago, they responded 90 days later (mid-summer). We submitted the full proposal (60+ pages) in October, and they have a 6-9 month lag time. They have tentatively scheduled a site visit for July - August, for a September Trustee Meeting. We have a great working relationship, so it isn't a matter of thinking they aren't interested. These just take time, and lots of it! Consider this when determining your funding deadlines and the time-line towards meeting them! Hope that helps... Do keep us posted, as it's always nice to have new contributors on board.
