Hello Catherine and welcome.
You are right to think about proceeding "one step at a time" and the first step is to create a plan for yourself for tackling this project. You said your "company" asked you to write grants. Is this a for profit organization or one that has non-profit status?
Also, a capital campaign involves much more than grant writing and must involve the community. You must learn as much about the project as you can and understand its strengths and weaknesses before you can begin to write a compelling Case for Support or proposal.
I am sure others on this forum will have good advice to offer.
