Bucky: Clarity would be of help... I am not a non-profit attorney, nor qualified to provide legal advice on structure of your organization. With that disclaimer stated, I would provide some thoughts for you to ponder...and encourage you to seek professional advice from qualified sources. Free information is available from your State Attorney General, and also the Secretary of State Offices. They maintain some basic publications and resources available for citizens of their states. (With that said): Have you thoroughly considered incorporating education of persons wishing to learn sign as part of the non-profit? The fees gathered (earned) could be used to serve the needs of the deaf, and still be within the realm of your non-profit...Many, many non-profits have fee based services and this falls within the scope of non profit operations (Salvation Army Thrift Stores are a good example, stretch your thoughts to Hospitals which are at the other end of spectrum). It could even go so far as job-placement services for assisting disabled individuals, in terms of job-placement when someone is trained. There are various ways to make this work...however, it must be done properly and with utmost transparency. You mention you do not have funds for this. I would interject kindly that you do not have funds for anything if you cannot afford to educate yourselves on best practices at this point, be it written books, educational seminars or hire of a non profit attorney. You mention that the organization has 'done nothing for a long time". It sounds like you have need of board revitalization (or a new )board to complete the major new directions issues you have highlighted.
