    Running a business

Posted by Bucky on 1/24/2008, 10:37 pm

Hi. I have a non-profit organization that has been doing nothing for a long time and right now we are starting to get busy. It's an organization in Colorado to improve the lives of Deaf people on a state-wide basis.

As we go on with our mission, we are going to setup a business, an interpreting service. This will have a different name than the non profit and we don't know what the name will be yet, but what do I need to do in order to make sure everything stays legal. Do I have to register this name as "DBA" for the NPO? What is a good website for a person like me who needs ELEMENTARY English in learning if this is Unrelated Business Income Tax and that I have to fill out the 990T form or not. You see, we've already kind of started a business plan and all that but I'm just not sure what all is needed to do in order to make it legal - or do we just do it and it's all reported on the 990 forms?

I probably have so many questions but I just need to educate myself first and wanted to see where I can find this information. We do not have enough money to inquire a lawyer, attend a workshop session on this or buy a whole bunch of books...

    Thanks,

    Bucky
