Aurelia is correct. When I served the Leukemia Society, we often made multi-year fellowship and scholarship awards to scientists, pursuing sustaining grants for same from corporate and family foundations. Even though the grant-making entities were made aware of the multi-year commitment LSA had made to these researchers, they still expected us to submit new proposals each year to sustain our award commitments. The early detection of childhood leukemia resulted from an arrangement like this!
