Please Advise - How Do I Cull Down National Grant Search?

Posted by Grant Writer Arlene on 1/5/2008, 12:39 pm

Any advice or suggestions would be APPRECIATED...

My grant writing experience, until now, has been working for local nonprofits. I've begun consulting with my first nationally operating nonprofit. For local clients, my foundation searches might result in a couple hundred potential grant donors and I would cull the list down, from there. For this national client I've located over a thousand potential donors and am facing the 'culling down the list' phase.

I first gather a list of foundations interested in the cause my client works for (discarding those who are not accepting applications). Next, for each foundation on my list, I gather giving guidelines and cull down the list of potential donors further, based on what they prefer/dislike as stated in their guidelines, and trends in their recent giving history.

I am wondering if I am creating more work for myself than is necessary or if I should just continue gathering guidelines and researching recent giving history for each potential grant donor; even for a thousand potential donors?

As my current client is working in all 50 states, I feel overwhelmed. It's a good problem to have - the list of potential donors is large! I work on my own and have considered that I may need to hire additional help.

    Any other suggestions or advice?

Thank you, in advance, for your very appreciated help!

    Best,
    Arlene
