Yes, those of us in the field must have strong research, writing, and business skills. We also must know how to plan and evaluate a project because many clients will come to us with just a need and have no idea how to turn that into a project that can be funded. We have to know how to price our services, how to negotiate, and, in my case, how to help some of my clients raise the funds to pay me.
It helps, also, to have a bit of coal dust in your veins;-)
