Rose, My first position in development was as director of the parents' program for my alma mater. I was, essentially, a generalist, directing volunteer-driven personal solicitation campaigns. I learned other aspects of fund-raising from others in the department. I believe that the more comprehensive your skill set, the better chance you have of getting hired. Since more funds are raised from individual donors, a versatile staff member is more valuable than one who just writes grants proposals because he/she can be applied to more promising sources of revenue.
