| Re: visually impaired and blind

Thomas: Your post brought to mind a few questions, and I think I can potentially offer a few suggestions. First, if you are listed as a non-profit (listed where, and by whom?) and you are in fact NOT a non profit organization as recognized by the Internal Revenue Service, then you need to phone your local IRS office and discuss that with them in order to clear up any misunderstanding and legal liability issues. Your local office can also answer all your questions pertaining to how to apply for non-profit status to receive donations for the work you wish to perform on behalf of the visually impaired. Although you mention that there are no services for the visually impaired in your local region, it is possible that an existing state organization may wish to expand into your area if they are aware that someone is interested and/or can assist them with that endeavor. It would be an excellent idea to contact organizations in Texas who work on behalf of the blind and visually impaired to discuss the ideas you have. You will want to speak with an Executive Director and/or Program Director to make your case. Working with an existing agency has many benefits if you can form a reasonable relationship. An existing organization will have directors, staff, volunteers and community partners already established, which represents literally years worth of time and energy. I highly recommend that you exhaust all avenues of partnering with those already invested in services for the visually impaired in the State of Texas, prior to launching a non profit to accomplish the ideas you wish to see developed. If you do endeavor to launch a non profit, may you find great success serving those in need! Best Regards
