| Re: statistics on year end giving

Miriam: There was a lengthy thread on the AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals) message system last week concerning timing of year end appeals, which underscores the fact that numerous organizations engage donors at year end for gift purposes. (For what it's worth, the common consensus of message contributers was mailers must be in potential donor's hands no later than December 15th). The message thread was contributed to by an organization which specifically handles on-line donation streams for non-profits, and the amount of funds they noted which transact between December 21st - December 31st was, in my opinion, quite staggering. That said, the figures are not worth noting because they were not in context...The contributer to the message thread did not note how many organizations the total dollars represented (100, 5,000?), nor put it in context of what percentage they represented for calendar year giving. I could certainly be in error, however, I believe that this percentage information you seek is entirely subjective to each individual organization, and has probably not been studied in depth enough to have generated a specific report. The foundation center does quarterly reports on philanthropic giving which includes the fourth quarter giving (retrospective for year end 2006, 05, etc.) That report is available via the link at the top of the page.
