    Re: Grantwriting fees

Welcome to the Message Board! If you search the old posts, there's a LOT of talk about grantwriting fees archived here. My firm charges a flat fee for 12 months of work, based on the body of work we plan to accomplish over the upcoming year. That 'body of work' assignment is based on pre-contract meetings and decisions made with the client, and on our own experience with how much of our time that amount of work will take, factoring in our average hourly rate. We ask for 25% down for new clients to cover the cost of the extensive grantmaker research to define that nonprofit's 'universe of possible grant opportunities'. Then we divide the balance of the annual fee into installments over the remainder of the contract year. Renewal contracts, which account for over half of our client base, require no down payment, and the agreed-upon annual fee is divided evenly into 12 monthly installments. It's really a pain to keep Time Sheets, and so difficult to know which hours to count as billable. A flat fee, per assignment, is easier. My business model is to never come in to compose just a single proposal for a client; the learning curve is just too steep before an outsider can write a compelling proposal for a client. I'd rather use that knowledge over and over, and I do everything I can to renew my clients' contracts year after year. We are one of the few firms that guarantees our work, and will continue to write proposals at no additional fee if the client hasn't at least recouped their investment in our fees with grant dollars by the end of the initial contract year. (Sometimes it just takes longer than 12 months before pending grants come in. How can I ask someone to renew their contract another year until we've succeeded for them? It's good business to keep plugging away until a nonprofit can renew with us with joy. And the larger percentage of our clients renew!) I hope that helps you.
