Sometimes, for small, community-based organizations, the grantwriter is all the development department they've got. When I was a consultant, I evolved from a grantwriter to a "Development Director by the hour," working steadily 5-10 hours a week with the same clients to advance their interests. Of course, I would never negotiate a collaboration by myself. I frequently initiated the discussion, however!
