    Re: The drama of fundraising

Suspense and drama? I recall the day (planned for a year) that a major fundraising event was to take place to kick off the campaign for a new facility. A massive tent was erected on the planned site for the gala adjacent to the old facility for some 700 guests to gather. It rained the night before and all day that day. Late in the morning, power went out throughout the City. The tent was flooded. The University was flooded, and with no power, no telephones, no elevators and with many important items on the top floor of the Advancement Building - and only a dark, steep, twisting staircase allowed the items to be carried down several floors. We hauled flashlights from cars, and some led, some carried, some followed with guiding lights - many trips. The events team located pumps, vacuums and generators and pumped out the tent. Volunteers lined up to refresh the tables and chairs and decorations. Facilities people came in and cleaned up the mud. Media relations blasted out phone, e-mails, news media reports that the function was still on. By 5:00 the power was back on, the tent was fresh as a spring rain, the tables were decorated, and staff was racing home to change into their finery and back again, calm welcoming smiles intact - and the event went off with few guests knowing that terror had struck the hearts of the advancement team that morning.
