I am a grant writing consultant and in my background is several years with a direct mail advertising company. The bottom line on direct mail is that a 1% to 2% response rate is good. I use direct mail to keep my client pool fresh and it works for me because I get a much higher response rate. Direct mail is often used for fundraising, as opposed to seeking grants which requires a focused grant writer. Look in the yellow pages or Google for Direct Mail specialists, they will handle the list acquisition, writing copy, and mailing.
