From my knowledge and reading several books on non-profits, it is nearly impossible. I'm facing the same dilemna with starting a non-profit, but wanting to be the one on the front lines (ED) and the one making the final decisions (Chairman). Since you can't do both, I am considering having my husband as the Chairman. Another thing I was not aware of is how you can be fired by your Board although the nonprofit is your idea.
