| Any recommendations re: contacting companies for product donations?

We are of the mindset that getting companies to donate product should be a path of less resistence. But how do we go about it? Perhaps not easy, but easier than getting a check? Does anyone have good or bad experiences in doing this? Should we start with cold-calls? Sending letters to a distant corp HQ? IF we could offer a certain PR value attached with the donation, could that make a difference? I'd appreciate any advice.
