| Re: Can our non-profit run a business to raise funds?

The nonprofit I am involved with raised money to purchase a portable rock climbing wall to raise money (weather permitting we have found is a challenge in Minnesota winters. Not many buildings are tall enough to use it during inhospitable weather in our rural area.)However, we get discounted rates to set up at fairs, etc and the income generated covers expenses to keep going. We also use it to provide service programs to schools, church groups, businesses, etc. for a fee. It isn't really a "for profit" but a fundraising tool, an "arm", and an assett of our nonprofit. It really gets attention, and ties into the nonprofit mission of promoting self confidence in youth. Works well for us except for temporary weather related challenges. Of course it really helped that the founder raised $25,000 in 2 weeks to purchase it and a local business donated a big truck to haul it!! We are obviously in different areas of mission focus, and I am not sure what is out there that could help with your fundraising issues. What exactly is the mission of your organization? Is it to help those medically with researching for cures, living with it, educating? That will also make a difference in what funding is available and who will fund it. Good luck!!Gwen
