| Can our non-profit run a business to raise funds?
Posted by Seth Markowitz on 2/13/2006, 9:35 am|
If the Girl Scouts can sell cookies, I wonder what we can sell to raise money. Let's face it, their cookies are delicious and not exactly a "tin cup" mentality. They must make big bucks with their cookies; in fact, I wonder what percentage of their opertaing funds come from these sugary morsels of tastey goodness? Some museums run cafes or gift shops, selling products that allow them to further their work. I have googled and looked through dozens of books on operating a for-profit venture to further our non-profit work and have come up with NOTHING! Could we sell a product through a legitmate business to raise the funds to further our cause? Is seed money difficult to come by if donors know you would use the funds to help make your non-profit self-sustaining? I'm most concerned about the legality and tax issues. Of course we are bootstrapping it, so we cringe at hiring more lawyers and accountants. Thanks in advance for anyone's advice. Seth
