As a former director of development and a consultant I have always gone to "those meetings" it is part of development. If they don't want you to go then ask them why. You can find many ways around that. I have handed out programs or worked registration for meetings just for the opportunity to meet the right people. Your board members might be members of business organizations where they can or are required to bring guest to their meetings volunteer or ask to go. Offer to speak for your organization at meetings there are lots of ways. Don't wait to be invited!
