| grants / American History

I'm having no luck zeroing in on grants for writers or rather historians specializing in American history.
The Universtiy Press of America / Hamilton books has offered a grand publishing and marketing deal but requires me to purchase 100 copies at $35.00 a piece. On top of that, getting permissions for the many quoted authors (709 footnotes), is also something I can't afford. Example: To quote from the introduction of Clinton Rossiter's Federalist Papers, requires me to pay a fee of $200. My professor never told me about this and unfortunately he passed away some years ago.
I'm looking for grants to complete this long time project in American History. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
