| Re: Grantwriters - Do you enjoy grantwriting?

I try to be invisible to grantmakers. Although I know many foundation Grants Managers personally, I usually prepare my clients as best I can for their Site Visit and them stay away. The client needs to build their own relationship with the grantmaker. You can't snow a Foundation Grants Manager on 'fluffy' budget projections; they've just seen too many budgets. I'd hate to be sustaining a Program on the fees generated from a Climbing Wall, but I'm not privy to the details, so who am I to say? I would use the more modest fee-income projections of my client, and try to make a case for broader grassroots giving and perhaps a Recurring Gift campaign to demonstrate financial sustainability. Although you have a responsibility to present your Client in the best light, you have an equal responsibility to the Grantmaker to give them the information they need to make an informed decision. I never forget that philanthropists could have chosen to buy a bigger house, more 'bling' and a trophy wife,...and instead they invest in charitable missions. I have no interest in helping the unworthy recieve grant money. You have to pick your Clients with care to afford an attitude like mine, I guess. If your client's financials prove them grant-worthy, chances are the foundation will recognize that. And visa-versa.
