Posted by Kay 1. Writing is only the last step in grant development. "Grantwriter" is a misnomer, in my opinion, because it negates all of the funder research, funder cultivation, project development, budget planning, consensus building, partner recruiting, and stewardship that goes into successful grant work. Do you see yourself leading committee meetings, talking to funders, setting up cultivation meetings between funders and key organization officials, and putting together budgets? Grant development takes many skills in addition to writing. All can be learned. 2. Can you multitask? Any organization that can afford to hire a grant developer will have multiple projects, requests for proposals, and reports going on in any given week, with conflicting deadlines. 3. Can you work calmly under pressure? Unlike most other areas of fundraising, many grant opportunities have hard and fast deadlines. You will undoubtedly have to work with colleagues who dawdle and procrastinate, and your well-planned proposal development schedule will fly out the window. Good luck!
