Pam,
I am so sorry to hear about your sweet Cuddles. I can only imagine how much of a shock this sudden turn of events was for you and your husband since you wrote about how well Cuddles was doing when you visited her yesterday. I guess the positive side of this is that you were somewhat prepared for this possibility based on your conversation with the vet. It is really great that you are able to recognize that if you had prolonged her suffering it would have been for your own need to have Cuddles with you for as long as possible. It sounds like Cuddles' passing was very peaceful and I'm glad that you got to spend some private time with her to say goodbye. Cuddles definitely appreciated having her favourite people that she loved dearly surrounding her in her final moments. Even though it was tough for you, Cuddles was grateful that you were there as a comforting presence. The fact that she was purring tells you how content and peaceful you made her feel.
As for the cremation, the process may bother you at the moment but I think you will find that you are glad you chose to have it done. Having Cuddles with you forever will hopefully bring you some comfort in these difficult days ahead. When I lost my boy Rocky last year I also had him cremated and they did a really nice clay paw print as a keepsake. I am happy to have him in my house (I couldn't bear the thought of not having him with me; I felt like I would be abandoning him).
Take as long as you need to grieve the loss of your little girl. She was an integral part of your life for 7 years and it's natural that you will feel a great sense of loss. One day you will be able to look back on those years and smile (even though it may not seem like it now when the pain is still so fresh).
I'm glad that your husband will be there to help you through this tough time. And your other cat will be there for you as well!
I'll be thinking about you in these coming days. We're here if you ever want to talk...
Stephanie
