Dear Sue,
I am so very sorry for your loss. What a difficult time for you.
I know it doesn't feel like it now, but there will come a time that you will be at peace with your loving decision to let your darling girl go. The decision is never, ever, easy to make, but when it is made with love, it is also never the wrong thing to do. Your poor darling Sarah is at peace now, and no longer having to live in discomfort, and with the embarrassment of her accidents. Dogs particularly, are very sensitive to doing what they think of as "wrong"...and you were very sensitive to her needs. Letting go is hard, period. But it is also the most loving thing you could do for a friend who had given you so many years of joy and love.
I'm glad that you were able to let her go in her own space, but I feel terrible that the vet was rather insensitive at the time. I can only tell you that someday, that last image you have will fade, and will be replaced with the many, many years of wonderful images that you have stored away in your heart.
Sarah knows you didn't give up on her. She knows you loved her, and love her still. And she will always love you, and be grateful that you were strong, and brave enough to end her suffering, knowing that you would be creating a new kind of suffering for yourself as you grieve her loss.
These coming days will be difficult to be sure, but please know that you are not alone in this pain. We've all been there, and want to help in any way we can.
Thinking of you,
Laurien
