Hi Sue,
I am so, so sorry to hear about Sarah. My heart was breaking for you while I read your post. I know this is an unbelievably difficult time for you. I am really glad you found this message board and were able to share your story with us. The best part of this board is that we've all been where you are and we know how much you are hurting. Just over a year ago, I had to put my 18 year old dog Rocky to sleep and it was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Like your girl Sarah, Rocky had lost his quality of life and I knew it was the best thing that I could do for him. I know you are feeling guilty wondering if you did the right thing or if it was the right time, but please believe me when I say that based on what you wrote about Sarah, I think you absolutely did what was right for her. Even though you had all those great years with Sarah, it's never enough time and it's the most selfless decision you could have made. Sarah is definitely at the Rainbow Bridge, young, free from pain and running around with all the other beloved pets that have been lost.
While I think it was such a great thing to have Sarah euthanized at home in your backyard, I am so sorry that you had to deal with the insensitivity of the vet afterwards. I can't imagine how hard it is to have that image of Sarah in your mind. Despite that, I can guarantee that Sarah definitely appreciated the fact that you made the whole experience as relaxing as possible in her own comfort zone. You obviously loved her so much and she was so lucky to have such a great mom who was able to put her needs first. In time, the pain will begin to subside and you will be able to look back on all the great memories you have of your little girl. Until then, take as much time as you need to in order to grieve. I still talk to my boy Rocky all the time and it makes me feel a lot better on those tough days when the pain is still as fresh as the day I lost him.
I am thinking about you and your family and your dear Sarah. She sounds like she was a very brave and sweet girl. We are always here to listen if you ever feel like you are ready to share more about your baby.
Stephanie
