Hi Hans,
I just wanted to say how much my heart is going out to you and your wife right now. Like Laurien and Cheryl said, you are completely normal to have the feelings you are experiencing. You have shared the last 14 years with your sweet Scully and obviously you love her dearly. It's always tough to watch our babies suffering, especially since we always look at them as the puppy or kitten they were when we got them. It's like they never really age in our minds. And then one day, you get news like you did and it hits you that somewhere along the way, through all those great memories and experiences, your baby grew up.
The only advice I can give you is that you will know when it is time. Before I had to let my 18 year old dog Rocky go last year, I knew the time was coming but I kept asking myself the same question: when will I know it's time? And then one day, I had this long heart-to-heart talk with my baby and I looked into his eyes and I knew in my heart that it was time to let him go. It broke my heart but I knew that it was the best thing to do for him. Trust your heart and spend some quality time with Scully. She'll let you know when it's time.
As for the burial at home, I am also not sure what the laws are surrounding that. I think there are some rules against burials in backyards in some places, you should definitely check with your city or town office. Cremation is definitely a great option as well. I had Rocky cremated and I have his ashes in an urn on my wall unit where I can talk to him all the time and where I still feel like he's here with me. It's definitely a personal decision for you to make.
Once again, I am so sorry to hear about Scully... I know this message board was a great comfort to me when I lost Rocky and we are always here to listen if you want to talk. We've all been there and we know that you will never truly be ready to lose your little girl, but we will be here for you when you need us.
I'll be thinking about you, your wife and Scully... spoil your baby and enjoy all the time you have with her. She knows you love her and I'm sure she is so happy to have such a great family.
Stephanie
