Dear Hans,
I'm so sorry to hear your news. And let me start by saying first off that NO, you are absolutely not stupid to feel this way! To so many of us, our animal friends are so much more than just a "pet". They are family members, loved, and adored no less than humans are.
You may feel like you will never be truly "ready" to make the decision to let Scully go, but I imagine that you will know when the time has come. I'm sure your vet will help keep you informed as well. Be sure to be open with him/her about your concerns. A good vet should be able to be of some help to you. The decision to let Scully will not be easy, those decisions never, ever are. But take some comfort in knowing that she will be at peace, when that time comes. It isn't an easy decision, but we are here, and will lend an ear as you need us.
I am not sure what kind of laws there are regarding pet burial, that may be something you want to look into. By-laws about that sort of thing do differ from one community to the next.
I personally had my beautiful Poubelle cremated when he died, and I keep his urn on a shelf, near a memorial frame of photos I did of him. Perhaps that may be a solution for you...it may be easier to bury the cremains. Just a thought. Depending on where you live, the local humane society may be able to help, or again, check with your vet.
I'm glad you found us here. We're glad to be of any help we can be. We may not have all the answers you need, but we will always, always listen!
Keep us posted...I'll be thinking of you and your Scully.
Thoughts are with you,
Laurien
