Hi Elizabeth,
I am so sorry to hear about Dusty. You are completely right that people can't understand what it feels like unless they have to make that decision themselves. Many times, people that aren't as bonded with their pets can't understand why you are so sad over the loss. The truth is that furbaby was a member of your family and like you said, you and Dusty were together before you had a family with your husband and son. It is completely normal that you are feeling so much pain... it is still very fresh in your mind. In time, it will get easier, you just need to take it one day at a time. But never feel guilty about how long it takes you to mourn the loss of Dusty. Even if those around you can't understand, take all the time you need and know that we are here for you and that all of us have gone through the same thing and can completely relate. You had so many great years with your little boy and he is very grateful that you were able to be with him at that difficult time and also that you were able to make that ultimate choice. Dusty knows that was really difficult for you to do but he also knows that you loved him so very much and that you were looking out for his best interests. He is no longer in pain and he is watching over you. He knows how sad you are but he also knows that you are a good mom for helping him when he needed you most. If you ever need to talk more about it, we are here to listen and would love to hear more about your boy Dusty when you feel ready to share some stories.
Sending a hug to you and your family,
Stephanie
