Hi Dianne,
First of all, let me say that I am so sorry to hear about your loss of Blue. I know this is such a difficult time and you feel like you will never be able to move past it. The feelings you are experiencing are completely normal and you should not rush the mourning process... it's different for everyone.
Sadly, not all of our beloved pets pass away peacefully in their sleep as many of us had wished for. Sometimes it's necessary for us to make that difficult decision about when "it's time". I want you to know that while it's normal to feel guilty, you have no need to be. From what you have said about her quality of life, it sounds like you made the best decision for your little girl. Blue could not tell you what she needed and she knew she could count on you to do what was best for her. You were her mom and she knew that you loved her so much. Please believe me when I say that she is not angry with you for making that choice. She is so happy that she was lucky to have a mom who loved her so deeply and shared all of those wonderful years with her. When I had my sweet dog Rocky put down in February at the age of 18, I also went through the "what ifs" and guilty feelings. The truth is we can never know for sure when the time is totally right but you know your baby and you can tell when they are just not themself anymore. You made the most selfless decision when you let Blue go and I know she is grateful that you were able to make that choice for her when she needed you to. Blue knew it would be so hard for you to be able to let her go but she also knew that she could count on you when she needed you most.
Again, I am so sorry to hear about your sweet girl. Even though you might not believe it now, it will get better in time and you will be able to look back on the good times you shared together and smile instead of feeling just sadness. If you would ever like to share more about your Blue, we are here to listen and would love to hear about her.
Sending a hug,
Stephanie
