Posted by Christine Johnson Mattie was a very special dog. She had special gifts that brought joy to so many people. Despite her hyperactive mature, she sensed when people were hurting and sad. Many times she would approach strangers and lay he head on their knees or simply stare at them with her beautiful brown eyes and will them to touch her and allow her love to flow into them. Mattie once slowly approached a young aboriginal boy sitting under a tree at Boney Castle Park. I cautioned her to and asked her to stay; she quickly glanced at me and kept moving, I followed. I had no choice and when I got closer I noticed the boy has 6 pack of beer with him and was drinking …not a good thing. But Mattie didn’t stop and walked right up to him and laid down beside him and just willed him to touch her, and he did, He looked up at me with the most beautiful but sorrowful face I had ever seen on such a young man and his voice deep with emotion said “you have a beautiful Dog what her name. I told him and he continued stroking her. Mattie never took her eys of him. After awhile he looked up and said, “my father died today I just came back from his funeral” Once such story does not constitute the gift….over the years Mattie would stop her normal squirrel chasing activities long amount to bestow her love and compassion on those who were hurting. The American couple who had lost their boxer a month before and had packed up their car and headed north to try and escape the pain (oh how I can relate now) and loosing their precious pet. Mattie picked them out in a crowd of 100s at the fork and would not leave them alone. Looking at Mattie had brought them so many painful memories that they fought to not succumb to her. But it was useless they fell for her magic and they were healed if only a little bit of their grief. …..Mattie has that effect on People in pain The women in a wheelchair at the forks who cried when Mattie laid her head on her chair an looked at her with compassion…..her words …”.you have a beautiful dog I though no one cared “ Mattie had that effect on people The women on the banks of the river who has just lost her fiancée. She cried and told me what a wonderful dog, she made me fell better, Mattie was special that way she sensed pain and ‘sincere sorry” and worked her magic. The stories are all wrapped up in a beautiful package in my heart and I just shared a few with you pay her homage. A dog that special that touched more lives …that most people do in a lifetime deserved to be recognized. And Mattie I hope you having a ball up there tonight ….and I hope Pebbles is with you. And when I get to heaven I expect both of you to be waiting for me at the gates doing your kidney bean dance and verging on hyperventilation with joy, Mattie was fun above all…..never too tired for a walk...even if she was only doing it to please me. Mattie loved cats, chasing squirrels, stalking rabbits and going for rides in the car. The smell of Mattie was everywhere in the car and a constant source of embarrassment when I gave people a ride…..but I didn’t care, the back seat was her domain and those who didn’t like it were likely not friend of mine so it didn’t matter much Mattie was curious as all get out. Inquisitive, to the point of annoying and very stubborn. To an indulgent mother like me all the most endearing of traits for they made her a constant source of enjoyment.....a very entertaining companion. Oh How I loved that about her…..perhaps above all her other traits that one most of all. So now the end is here, and my darling little fur girl is gone and All I have is the memories. And the memories are so precious. To the people who were so important to Mattie Ed- how she loved you….sometimes I think more than me, but I didn’t mind as long as she was happy that’s all that mattered . Thank you Ed for being our special friend and I love you for being with us as the end. I’ll never forget you Lori and Noah – Mattie did her little dance just for you at the end. The day before you barged in at the emergency hospital willing to lie and/or cheat to see her, and you did you made her happy and for that you have both of you so much for adding to our lives Norm and Adele- for introducing Blue to Mattie, what a wonderful scene to see both of them fighting paying over the Soccer balls. Blue…. I think Mattie loved you best of all in the “doggie boy friend” Blue …How much Mattie and enjoyed meeting you Roger and Patrick –her Bros …..You sometimes drove her to a frenzy….PJ you especially. But it didn’t see to matter to her how much you smoked, she still wanted to say hello……she sensed that you were special to me so okay …that was good enough for her Rose, thank you for your love and compassion, you gave me hope when I needed hope and acceptance (like today) when I needed confirmation that I was doing the right thing. Only another dog lover could understand (especially a women) Thanks you all for being Mattie’s friend …….I think we can all say are better people today because of her Christine July 3, 2007

MEMORIES of MATTIE
I put Mattie to sleep tonite. And finally gave her the greatest gift you can give a dog who is so sick but who you love. My baser instincts was to pray for a miracle recovery so that I could push her to live a little longer, but once I looked into her beautiful face and I saw the weariness in her eyes, I knew the right time has come and although it broke my heart I let her go. The tears we shed dropped on her poor emaciated little body and soaked her fur. We annoited her with our love and our tears
The stories of such love are countless and poignant. And perhaps too beautiful to relate at this very raw time without distorting them with emotions. …..but I will try. They deserve to be told
Love to all
